Biology project
My biology project for term 1 was based on a topic from Ecology. I chose to do the top 5 most endangered species as I was curious and interested in the topic.
French project on Vietnam
In my French class my teacher put us in groups to work on a country that speaks French. My group was assigned Vietnam and we all split the work between and made a PowerPoint presentation which we presented to the class. My role in the project was to wtite about tourism and the weather in the country.
Public speaking project
For public speaking our project was to write a speech supported by a PowerPoint and present it to an examiner. I chose to write my speech on "The economic and social problems we have in our society for people with disabilities.
Speech
As individuals we treat everyone as we would like to be treated but we can forget this rule when it comes down to the physical or mental appearance of a person. I find in our society that there are problems that people with disabilities struggle with on a daily basis, whether it's how they are locked at by people or being frustrated with themselves for not being able to complete a task. I noticed this on a regular basis by growing up with my brother who is moderately disabled. From growing up with my brother I notice it more when he is looked by people and it makes me feel more passionate about this topic and I feel almost compelled to seek a change. I notice especially with younger children that they often stay at my brother for long periods of time and this leads to my brother and family feeling upset and uncomfortable. I think parents and schools should highlight this as I will provide a better acceptance towards people with disabilities.
When we look to the past we can see how it was un fair to be overly critical towards people with disabilities. I think it's important to look back and take into account of what would've happened to them in the past compared to what happens to them now. In the past anybody who was mentally or physically disabled ended up destitute, Walking the streets or put into mental institutions or a workhouse. A lot of people with disabilities or a medical condition were considered to be possessed by the devil this shows how barbaric people were towards these people and they would often throw stones at them when they walked down the street, So things have massively improved but they can still get better.
It is sadly a part of human nature that within society the majority will selectively decide to cast certain members of the society out depending on what is socially or psychologically unacceptable to society at that time. I noticed this amongst my age group and I think my generation can be quite harsh and condescending towards people if they are any way different from them. I think my generation can be quite extreme with how they express their opinion on other peoples appearances and it is obvious that we use condescending terms more often than any other generation. It is common amongst my generation to call each other a retard, handicap or autistic and I think this is because of the high influence we have on each other to say these terms. I have noticed this hugely in recent years amongst others and also myself and has made me realise how unfair it is to the people that it's affecting and how much of a bad habit it has become.
As I was saying earlier that it is sadly part of human nature that the majority of people will cast aside certain members of society out depending on what is socially or psychologically unacceptable. I think this runs contradictory to the wide-ranging and generally applied concept of political correctness. I think we tend to either fall off a cliff or push others off and there seems to be a mindset to push people off before you fall. There still remains within society today an element of mob rule which can lead to people being isolated within society for the same reason as above and i think that is because people are afraid of becoming isolated themselves.
I think both socially and economically we live in a fiercely competitive world and a person can fall off very suddenly and see their life in ruins as a result. This leaves people either winning or losing dramatically. The winning move onwards and the losers and their families are left behind. I think the Reality is that this fate is almost guaranteed for anybody who is born with a disability but also those who require a disability during their lifetime by medical reasons or by accident which is a major problem as it is unfair for those individuals.
I understand that the government have huge responsibility in paying social welfare but I think they should be also be more focused on improving facilities and giving more opportunities for people with disabilities to make it a more fair and equal world and I think it is essential that it is a more economically equitable society that we live in. The sad thing is the trend seems to be moving away from that and it is clear that governments around the world will continue to be insufficiently funded to deal with the issue and the problems resulting in the marginalisation of people with disabilities will stay the same unless we do something about it.
