Gaisce
This year i am participating in the Gaisce bronze award. To get the award i must do 13 weeks of community service, physical recreation and a personal skill all for 1 hour a week. I also have to complete 13 weeks extra of any of the requirements so i chose to do 26 weeks of physical recreation.
For my community service i worked in the St. Vincent de Paul charity shop in Bray. I worked there every Tuesday from 1 - 2:30 pm. I started my Gaisce in September 2017 but i didn't start my community service until November and i missed a lot of the days with the musical. Every Tuesday my mum would collect me from the school at lunch and we would both go down to the shop and volunteer for a few hours. My mum had known the manager and a lot of the staff as she has been volunteering there for the past 5 years every Tuesday so it was enjoyable to work with my her. In the shop i would take old things off the shelves and replace them with the new typically anything that has been out for more than three weeks was sent back to the depot. I organised things like DVD's, books, CD's, clothes etc, i helped the manager in any way i could. The first few times i worked there i depended a lot on the manager to tell me what to do but as the weeks went on i knew what had to be done and how the shop was run which made it a lot easier.
Overall it was a really great experience that i really enjoyed and i am going to miss working there now that my Gaisce is finished.
For my personal skill i did the steer clear driving course in the school every Thursday after school, i had also done a 10 week long Barista course which i could have used also. I am happy that i chose to do steer clear as driving is and always has been an ambition for me and it really gave me a boost to help me pass my Theory exam. The classes were really enjoyable and we had a good laugh with the instructor who had a great sense of humour. He taught us a lot of the theory and road safety which is important for me to know for when i start my lessons. We also learned a lot of practical skills like how to change a tire and we discussed the dangers or drink driving. It was an interesting and enjoyable course to complete and i learned a lot from it.
For my physical recreation i did soccer in the school every Thursday before steer clear. I really enjoyed that aspect of the award and it was a nice way to get some exercise and have some fun with my friends.
I think Gaisce was a really great thing for me to take part in. I think it has really changed me as a person and it was nice to be apart of something every week of the year. I am really happy and proud that i completed my Gaisce and i look forward to getting the award.
